How to Save Your Skin this Halloween

Halloween is that special time that comes once a year when you can don a set of animal ears and tail, summon your inner zombie, or play a sexy pirate in public and nobody will think any less of you!!   If you are anything like me, Halloween also means a creative face full of fun makeup.  But all of that heavy makeup can really take a toll on your skin, so if you want to prevent fright-night from carrying over to the morning after in the form of pimples, dried-out skin, or allergic reactions, follow these simple steps.

#1 Properly prepare your skin

Before loading on massive amounts of makeup, it is important to lay the proper Halloween makeup foundation -- especially if you are using a heavy base color to create your mime face or favorite KISS character, since such makeup can be very drying.  Start by hydrating your freshly cleansed skin with a thermal spring water spray such as Avene.  Next apply a nourishing moisturizer – I prefer Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore.  Finally, add a layer of a high quality, silicone-based primer such as gloMinerals Face Primer.  This will shield your makeup from soaking into your pores and prevent your Blue Man Group face from leaving you stained for the next 24 hours!

#2 Choose high-quality makeup

Probably the most important advice that I can give you is to skip the cheap party/drug store makeup kits.  Honestly, if you are going to take that route, you might as well stick your face in a vat of motor oil and dirt, then call it a night!  Mineral makeup like gloMinerals is the healthiest choice for your skin.  Most mineral lines include vibrant color choices and pencils that will suit most creative looks.  If you need some truly dramatic foundation colors to achieve your classic sugar skull or zombie look, opt for true theater makeup instead, such as Kryolan Supracolor.

#3 Stay Hydrated

Throughout your evening, be sure to drink plenty of water.  Sugary cocktails and endless bowls of tiny candy bars can also wreak havoc on your skin the next day.  Staying hydrated throughout the evening can be your skin’s saving grace!

# 4 Double cleanse your skin

For the love of all that’s weird and spooky in the world, DO NOT fall asleep in your Halloween makeup!  Take the time at the end of the night to remove it all and allow your skin to breathe again.  Start with a professional makeup remover such as Dermalogica’s PreCleanse or Avene’s Micellar Lotion to remove the bulk of your makeup.  Follow up with a mild gel cleanser to remove everything and leave your skin squeaky clean.

#5 Treat your skin to a masque

End your spook-tacular night by treating your skin with SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Masque.  Apply a thin layer to your freshly cleansed skin and sit back and relax for 10 minutes.  This soothing gel will reduce redness, calm, and hydrate your post-party skin ensuring that you awake refreshed ready for the day ahead.

Have a safe and boo-tiful Halloween!
